BBC's Mark Lowen was deported from Turkey today after being detained for 17 hours by Turkish authorities while reporting on mass protests in Istanbul.
Lowen had traveled to cover unrest sparked by the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, President Erdogan’s top political rival, who is jailed on contested corruption charges.
Turkish officials claimed Lowen posed a “threat to public order.”
The BBC condemned the move, calling it a “deeply troubling” attack on press freedom.
Over 1,400 protesters have been detained nationwide.
Erdogan has dismissed the demonstrations as “evil,” while opposition leaders plan a major rally this weekend.
