Armenia is 97% Christian — one of the most religiously homogenous Christian countries in the world.
Roughly the size of Maryland, Armenia sits in a volatile neighborhood—bordered by Muslim-majority Turkey and Azerbaijan. It shares deep cultural and historical ties to Christianity, being the first nation to adopt it as a state religion in 301 AD.
For decades, Armenia has been locked in a bitter conflict with Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region, a majority-Armenian Christian enclave.
In 2023, Azerbaijan launched a military offensive and took full control of the region. Over 100,000 ethnic Armenians fled—virtually emptying the territory.
Now, in 2025, peace talks are underway.
Both nations are working on a final agreement.
But there’s a catch: Azerbaijan is prosecuting former Armenian leaders from Nagorno-Karabakh, stoking fears of retribution and cultural erasure.
Meanwhile, Armenia’s pivot toward the West has picked up speed.
