SQUIRRELS MIGHT BE THE SECRET TO DEEP SPACE TRAVEL

Some squirrels survive eight months underground without eating, drinking, or moving — and somehow, they don’t die, rot, or fall apart.

During hibernation, their heart rates slow to just a few beats per minute, their breathing almost stops, and their body temperatures drop below freezing — yet they wake up healthy, muscles intact, and even reverse things like diabetes.

NASA and the European Space Agency are studying these squirrels because if humans could copy this “extreme hibernation,” we could survive years-long space missions without starving, aging, or going crazy.

Imagine astronauts sleeping through the trip to Mars instead of eating a thousand freeze-dried meals and running on a treadmill for 2 years.

The biggest lesson from squirrel science: If you want to explore deep space, you might need to learn how to almost die — but not quite.
