Goma, a major city in eastern Congo, was taken over by rebels months ago.
Since then, 1,359 disarmed government soldiers and police—plus their families—have been stranded at a UN base, surrounded by gunmen.
This month, they were quietly flown and driven nearly 1,250 miles to Kinshasa in a Red Cross-led operation so sensitive, no photos were allowed.
The region’s been in chaos for decades—dozens of armed groups fighting over land loaded with gold, tin, and cobalt.
Over 7 million people have been forced from their homes.
That includes 100,000 this year alone.
