Turns out orange cats owe their color to a missing chunk of DNA that flips their fur from dark to Cheeto-mode.

Researchers found a 5,100-letter deletion on the X chromosome that makes a gene go rogue, turning off black pigment and blasting orange instead.

That same gene also explains why almost all calico and tortoiseshell cats are female—because female cats get two X chromosomes to play mix-n-match with.

Plot twist: every orange cat today probably descends from one ancient spicy feline.
