Atef Najib, cousin of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad and head of the security apparatus in Daraa, has been arrested by the new Syrian government's security forces in Latakia.
Notorious for his role in the brutal repression of early protests, his actions in early 2011, particularly the pulling out of children's fingernails as a torture method for anti-regime graffiti, are believed to have ignited the Syrian civil war.
