Italy's government approved a draft law defining femicide as a distinct crime motivated by gender-based hate, rather than just a homicide sub-category.
Currently, murder aggravations apply only if the killer is a spouse or relative.
The new law recognizes violence against women as a systemic issue, not just domestic cases.
PM Giorgia Meloni called it a “step forward” as the world celebrates International Women's Day.
In 2024, Italy recorded 113 femicides - 99 committed by relatives or partners.
