A new study reveals that German women earn, on average, 20% less after getting married—while men’s salaries remain completely unaffected.

The reason? Women work fewer hours or leave the workforce entirely, often due to outdated tax policies and traditional gender roles.

One in ten women stop working after marriage, and even those without kids see their earnings shrink.

Meanwhile, men?

No financial change at all.

Researchers found women from former East Germany—where gender roles were historically more progressive—experienced smaller income drops than those in the West.

Germany might pride itself on gender equality, but when marriage cuts a woman’s paycheck while leaving a man’s untouched, something’s clearly off.
