Los Angeles County will pay $4 billion to settle nearly 7,000 claims of childhood sexual abuse in its juvenile and foster care systems—surpassing payouts from the Boy Scouts and Catholic Church.
The abuse, spanning decades and including staff at the now-shuttered MacLaren Children’s Center, was exposed after California's AB 218 law reopened expired claims.
Victims described druggings, beatings, and rape.
The deal, pending approval, will be funded through bonds and budget cuts, with payouts beginning in 2026.
“It recognizes the horrific harm that has been done,” said attorney Patrick McNicholas.
