APE COMMUNICATION SHOCKS SCIENTISTS: LANGUAGE MAY BE 7M YEARS OLD

A major study reveals wild apes called bonobos can combine vocal sounds to form phrases with complex meanings—something once thought exclusive to humans.

Researchers recorded 700 calls from these African great apes and found they use specific sound combinations to express ideas like “let’s do what I’m doing” or “let’s find peace.”

Some phrases added meanings together. Others changed the meaning entirely—just like how we say “bad dancer” doesn’t mean “bad” + “dancer.”

Scientists now believe the roots of human language stretch back at least 7 million years—shared with our closest relatives.
