Estonia is moving to expand its military’s authority at sea, with new legislation that would allow its defense forces to use force—including sinking civilian ships—if they pose a significant threat.
The draft law, proposed by the National Defense Committee of the Riigikogu, would extend Estonia’s operational reach into its exclusive economic zone and grant military powers to defend infrastructure, ports, and vital services when other measures are ineffective or too slow.
Committee Chairman Kalev Stoicescu:
“This should enable us to operate beyond the 12-mile territorial sea, right up to the edge of neighboring economic zones."
