NASA’s Perseverance rover has stumbled on a rock so weird, even Earth geologists are scratching their heads.

Nicknamed “St. Pauls Bay,” this Martian oddball is studded with perfect black spheres—some round, some jagged, some straight out of a sci-fi art gallery.

Theories are flying:

Are they volcanic hailstones?

Impact debris?

Whatever they are, they’re not where they belong—this "float rock" was displaced, and now it’s throwing the whole Jezero Crater timeline into question.

NASA calls it one of the most intriguing finds yet.
