🇬🇧🏴 UK PRISONS ARE BURSTING AT THE SEAMS...AGAIN
England and Wales have just 961 prison cells left. That’s 98.9% full—basically standing room only.
Men’s prisons have 551 spaces. Women’s? Just 261. Youth jails are holding on with 141.
It’s worse than last year’s crisis, when the government had to free 3,000 inmates early.
Some only served 40% of their time—and we might be headed there again.
Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood won’t rule out releasing even violent offenders this time. Fun.
Meanwhile, the Howard League says the system’s “unsustainable,” overcrowded, and can’t do its job.
But don’t worry, the government plans to maybe build 14,000 new places… by 2031.
So just hang tight for 6 more years.
