šMario Nawfal:
AI SCAMS JUST WENT FULL BLACK MIRROR | THE NEXT-GEN CRIME WAVE
It started with a tax return.
Nancy, 69, sat down at her laptop and got a warning. āCall Microsoft now,ā the screen said. āYouāre being hacked.ā So she called.
The man on the line told her hackers had downloaded child pornography to her computer and moved $18,000 to Russia.
He said Homeland Security was on the case. He transferred her to āthe fraud departmentā at her bank.
They knew her local branch. Her account details. They told her to withdraw cash, buy crypto, and wire it to a secure account. Or she could face arrest.
None of it was real.
This is the scam economy. A dark mirror of the real world, built on large language models, deepfakes, and your stolen data.
No Nigerian prince emails. No typos. Just generative AI, trained to talk like your grandkid, spoofing voices, cloning numbers, and making it all feel real.
The results are staggering. The FTC estimates Americans lost somewhere between $24 billion and $158 billion last year to fraudāso much goes unreported, they canāt even pin it down.
And this isnāt just grandma scams.
Criminals now build entire synthetic identities: fake names, fake SSNs, fake online footprints. Some are applying for jobs, loans, and college aid.
The scams are scaling. The protections arenāt.
Nancy hung up just in time. Most people donāt.
