For the first time since the war in Ukraine broke out, a senior Putin official is heading to Washington - with special permission to enter despite being under sanctions.

Kirill Dmitriev, CEO of Russia's sovereign wealth fund and key Putin ally, received a temporary sanctions lift to meet with Trump's envoy Steve Witkoff as peace talks accelerate.

The Harvard-educated Dmitriev previously helped secure American teacher Marc Fogel's release from Russian prison - described as a "goodwill gesture" toward the Trump administration.

This diplomatic breakthrough comes despite Trump's recent frustration with Putin, who he claims is "dragging their feet" on peace talks.
