In a potential breakthrough, the Congolese government and M23 rebels will hold their first direct negotiations on April 9 in Doha, according to sources from both sides.
The talks mark a major step in Qatarโs mediation effort to end the deadliest conflict in eastern Congo in decades.
Congolese Official:
"Talks are scheduled for April 9โunless the other side misbehaves."
This follows a surprise March 18 meeting between Presidents Tshisekedi and Kagame.
Both parties have agreed not to reveal the content of the negotiations, as fighting continues to displace thousands in the mineral-rich border region.
