🇺🇸 SAN FRANCISCO TIES SPEEDING FINES TO INCOME IN NEW POLICY
San Francisco has rolled out a new policy where speeding fines are based on a driver’s income, aiming to make penalties more equitable.
Under the Speed Safety System Pilot Program, fines range from $50 to $500 for speeding over 11 miles per hour above the limit.
Drivers with a household income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level—about $30,120 for a single person—can get a 50% discount.
Homeless individuals qualify for an 80% discount.
The city has set up 33 speed cameras in high-injury areas like school zones, with only half currently active, issuing warnings for the first 60 days.
