The U.S. has put a strict rule in place, stopping American government workers in China, along with their families and contractors who have security clearances, from having any romantic or sexual relationships with Chinese citizens.
This new policy, started by former U.S. Ambassador Nicholas Burns in January, covers the U.S. Embassy in Beijing, consulates in Guangzhou, Shanghai, Shenyang, Wuhan, and the consulate in Hong Kong.
It’s a big change, not seen since the Cold War, and comes from worries about Chinese intelligence using relationships to get secrets.
The only way out is if someone already has a relationship and gets special permission—otherwise, they have to end it or leave their job.
