Taiwan has strongly criticized Trump’s new 32% tariff on its goods, calling it “highly unreasonable” and vowing to start serious negotiations with the U.S.
Cabinet spokeswoman Michelle Lee expressed deep regret over the decision, which is part of Trump’s broader tariff plan, including a 10% base rate on all imports.
While Taiwan’s key semiconductor chips are exempt, analysts warn the tariffs on components could still hurt the chip industry, vital for global tech.
Taiwan, with a $73.9 billion trade surplus with the U.S. in 2024, had already prepared support plans for affected sectors.
