𝕏’S FREE SPEECH POLICY DEFENDED BY ACADEMIC FIGURES
Gad Saad and 37 other professors signed a letter 'Against Censorship and Its Academic Supporters' as a reply to another petition from Academia criticizing Elon's and 𝕏's free speech policies.
"We are dismayed by the public letter “Against Big Tech’s Attack on Digital Sovereignties,” signed by many notable academics, including Daron Acemoglu and Thomas Piketty", the letter from Gad Saad et al. reads.
Titled “Against Big Tech’s Attack on Digital Sovereignties”, the initial petition criticizing 𝕏 and its policies in Brazil argues that they go against "the development of local tech ecosystems."
"Brazil’s dispute with Elon Musk is only the latest instance in a wider effort to restrict the ability of sovereign nations to define a digital developmental agenda free from the control of US-based megacorporations", it reads.
In response, the letter from Gad Saad et al. reminds that 𝕏 is not trying to enforce its own arbitrary rules on the country but, on the contrary, to respect Brazil's sovereignty through its own laws: "X complied with these orders [from Justice Alexandre de Moraes] until April 2024, when Elon Musk stated this would violate laws in Brazil".
The letter in defense of 𝕏 also reminds that free speech is enshrined in Brazilian law itself: "Brazilian law establishes that any judicial order to remove content from a social platform must specify what content is to be removed ... [and it] also affirms the constitutional protection of free speech."
The letter concludes with a firm stance in favor of free speech:
"We uphold free speech and are committed to maintaining a free marketplace of ideas where the exchange of thoughts is not suppressed, regardless of whether they are deemed offensive, unwise, immoral, or disagreeable by some."
