Tankers near the Strait of Hormuz are disappearing from navigation screens and reappearing on land, sometimes on camel racetracks.
Almost 1,000 ships a day recently experienced GPS jamming near Iran, raising fears of crashes, oil spills, and maritime gridlock.
Experts point to spoofing and jamming by state-level actors, potentially linked to missile defense systems.
In one incident, a $260 million supertanker veered off course, and its crew had to navigate by sight.
A crash involving the Front Eagle led to a 10 sq km oil spill, and may have been caused by signal interference.
Even small positioning errors are dangerous in narrow, high-traffic chokepoints like the Strait of Hormuz.
